Vijay Singh offered Open Championship spot

Former world number one Vijay Singh will be packing his golf clothing for a trip to Royal St George's later this month after he was handed a wildcard spot.

However, the Fijian faces a race against time to get back to full fitness before the tournament.

The 48-year-old will be hoping to recover from a back injury which forced him to pull out of last week's AT&T National in the US in time for the Open Championship as he finished second the last time it was held at the same course.

He was one of five players added to the Open field on Monday along with Webb Simpson, JB Holmes, Steve Marino and Japan's Yuta Ikeda.

The positions became available as Rory McIlroy, Charl Schwartzel, KJ Choi and Luke Donald are all exempt after high profile tournament wins this year.

Reserves will be anxiously waiting for news on Tiger Woods, who is yet to decide if he will play, and Tomas Levet, who injured his shin jumping into a lake following his French Open success.
