Sergio Garcia may miss Open after dropping out of qualifier

Sergio Garcia is expected to miss out on the Open Championship after dropping out of the final international qualifier in Texas.

The Spaniard became the latest high profile player to pull out of a tournament after only a few holes, following the example of Tiger Woods at The Players Championship two weeks ago.

Garcia blamed an infected finger nail on his left hand for leaving the event early.

He posted on his Twitter account: "Unfortunately had to wd from qualifier this morning because of an infected finger nail in my left hand. Couldn't hold the club comfortably."

The world number 73, who has struggled for form in recent years, said he hoped to be fully fit for the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Garcia will be hoping to shrug off his injury as he needs to win the tournament in Texas if he has any chance of reaching the top 50 in the world, a ranking which will guarantee him entry in the Open.
