Sam Torrence has given his backing to Jose Maria Olazabal and says the former Masters champion will bring the best out of Europe's players in Illinois.
Olazabal still holds the record with Seve Ballasteros for the most points gained by a partnership in the history of the tournament.
Torrance told BBC Radio Scotland's The Golf Show: "He will be the most inspiring captain we have ever had. He is an incredible human being."
The Scot is well versed in Ryder Cup golf as he played every event from 1981 until 1995 before successfully captaining the side to victory at the Belfry in 2002.
Asked if he would like to pull on the European golf shirt and golf trousers once again for a crack at captaincy Torrence said he would have done it but he thought he wasn't the right person for the job.
"When I was captain I was still on tour and seeing them every week and creating a bond. If you are not out with them every week it is very difficult," he explained.
