Rory McIlroy to be world's highest paid sportsman?

Rory McIlroy could become the world's highest paid sportsman as brands clamour to have their logo his golf clothing or get him to endorse their products.

The Irishman, whose record-breaking US Open win over the weekend wowed golf fans and sponsors alike, is being touted to better Tiger Woods' $1 billion earnings, despite being just 22 years old.

Nigel Currie, director of sports sponsorship agency Brand Rapport, told Channel 4 News: "Winning a major tournament will probably double his off-course earnings over the next year. The next real target he will be setting himself is becoming number one in the world, and remaining there in the next few years."

He added that if the young golfer does become the world number one, he could also net the title of world's best paid sports star.

The US Open was McIlroy's first Major win. He finished on under 16 and won by eight shots.
