The history of Sunderland Golf Clothing...

Sunderland Golf Clothing

Sunderland Golf clothing has long been regarded as one of the leading manufacturers.

...Thanks to their research into fabric technology and design, and strong presence within the competitive game. Their reputation for reliability means Sunderland waterproofs continue to grow from strength to strength at Function18.

This well-loved brand came to life through the vision of Toby Sunderland. He had been born into a family of tailors who had been making clothes in Glasgow, Scotland, since 1911. The young Toby studied the trade in Leeds before joining the family business back north of the border.

Toby and his wife, Ida, founded what is now known as Sunderland of Scotland in 1966, with the aim of filling the void in flexible, specialist rainwear for golfers.

Sunderland Golf pushes boundaries and broadens horizons

Their first product, an ultra-lightweight golf rain suit was revolutionary, made from Italian acrylic coated nylon it pushed the boundaries - and the brand’s ethos of achieving fantastic results became established.

After that, Sunderland continued to introduce first-of-their-kind designs. They were first to introduce a fleece-lined pocket and custom embroidery, which would go on to become a corner of the market they would make their own.

In 1970, Sunderland golf clothing was shown at the PGA Merchandise Show in Florida. It was the first time any British company in the industry had done this, and was a mark of how quickly Sunderland’s reputation had grown in just a short space of time.

Traditional values, modern needs

In 2009, Glenmuir became the official European distributor of Sunderland products. The brand continues as strong as ever today.

Their range is extensive, and includes stylish designs for the modern golfer. But at its heart is a commitment to quality. That is exactly why we at Function18 are proud to stock Sunderland, and why, almost 50 years on, their products remain popular with professional and amateur golfers alike around the world.
