Ian Poulter will not be packing his IJD design clothes for a trip to St Mellion this year as the English Open has been cancelled due to a lack of sponsorship.
The event organisers have said they were unable to secure the £2 million required to host the event in August and the news has led to growing fears over the viability of professional golf in England.
Cancellation of the event means that just two tournaments will be held in England in 2011, the PGA Championship and the Open Championship.
Stephen Towers, resort director at St Mellion, told BBC Radio Cornwall: "We'd need a headline sponsor to bring in over £1m to stage this event.
"So going out there and finding sponsorship we're looking at the high-end blue-chip companies, but a lot are involved in Olympic sponsorship and many others are curtailing their spending back with the current economic times."
It was recently revealed that Spanish golfer Miguel Angel Jimenez has put £2 million into the Andalucian Open to keep the Malaga event on the calendar.
