Johan Edfors shot an excellent 64 in the first round of the inaugural Volvo Golf Champions in Bahrain on Thursday (January 27th) to lead the pack.
The Swede has played in more than 100 European Tour Events without adding to the three victories he claimed in 2006.
But the 35-year-old hit top form in his golf clothing to set the early pace on day one, two shots ahead of Spain's Pablo Larrazabal and compatriot Peter Hanson.
He hit nine birdies in a superb round which saw him elevated to one of the favourites to win the tournament.
"I think I am a lot better player than five years ago, but the results have not really shown that," Edfors said.
"It's all up to where they put the flags here. I had a bunch of chances from around 15 feet and holed a few of them."
Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, renowned for his distance off the tee, also holed nine birdies but found water on the seventh and 18th to end up with a five-under 67.
