Byrd swoops to claim Hawaii title

Jonathan Byrd claimed the first title of the 2011 PGA Tour season after winning a tense play-off at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

The 32-year-old American saw off the challenge of compatriot Robert Garrigus in the second hole of the play-off after both players shot a final-round 67 to finish on 24-under par.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell narrowly missed out on joining the US pairing in the shootout after carding a stunning course record of 62, but he fell one shot short.

IJP Design golf clothing ambassador Ian Poulter hit a fine 62 to secure a top ten finish, with the Englishman six shots adrift of the leaders.

Speaking after holding his nerve to seal the title victory, Byrd told Sky Sports 3: "I played solid all day, I felt good out there, but I was a little anxious, a little nervous. It's a great feeling."
