US hotshot Jonathan Byrd and Swede Carl Pettersson both hit rounds of 66 to share the lead after the first round of the Tournament of Champions.
The pair lead the pack on seven-under par in the Hawaii tournament, with Pettersson sinking eight birdies and one bogie, while Byrd claimed an eagle in his impressive opening round.
He hit four birdies and even notched an eagle at the par-five fifth, but dropped shots at 11 and 18.
Last year's form player Graeme McDowell had an inconsistent day but managed to finish the day with a credible 71.
Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy was forced to withdraw just an hour before the start due to a finger injury.
The 33-year-old Australian cut his hand on coral while coming out of the sea. His injury required 12 stitches and put an end to his hopes of defending his title.
